The Cheese Shop Xmas Show 1998 (#7)

1998 saw the Xmas Show debut for the fabulously inelegant Miss Itchy. Many performers in Melbourne's comedy scene gained confidence doing darker, stranger material during this time and the notion of 'wrong' comedy flourished. Miss Itchy (Linda Haggar and Fahey Younger) were great exponents of this style, provoking their audiences verbally, visually and even physically (showering them with meat, for example) in an effort to raise the comic stakes. Some of Miss Itchy's material (and, luckily, most of the meat) went over the audience's head, and while some people would attempt to intellectualise their efforts, Miss Itchy defied description let alone explanation - even to themselves - which was half the fun, of course.
Adam Richard graced the Cheese Shop Xmas Show stage for the first time in 1998, and Flacco re-appeared after not having performed at the Cheese Shop for a long while. Sue-Ann Post discussed her exploits with the hammer-throw, and Plop! made one of their enjoyably odd appearances in some sort of Oriental get-up. The night concluded with Tripod's debut on the Xmas Show stage... just one of the many acts encouraged by Dave who have blossomed since his death. Despite his cynical old, bitter and twisted ways I imagine Dave would still take pride in their success.
The 1998 Cheese Shop Xmas Show was the last for Dave. In the early part of the show, Dave makes reference to the video feed of the onstage performances displayed on the large white screen behind him, and points out that the camera is recording the back of his head. Unknowingly, Dave points to the very place a tumour would develop over the next few months, if the process had not begun already. (I mention this only in the spirit of macabre irony that Dave so enjoyed.)
